Hey girls and guys! For curly-haired people, the texture defines the beautiful curls and coils of the hair. It makes you stand out in a crowd in the best way possible. You should rock your textured locks with confidence. One way to do this is to find out what hair type you have; not all curls are made the same. This is in no way to imply that there is a certain type of curly hair that is best. Instead, the best way to take care of your hair is to find out what kind you have.
Think of this as your introduction to hair care! Let’s explore.
Find your curly hair type!
There are a few different options for figuring out which hair type you have. It is also worth noting that any ethnicity can have any hair type.
Wavy Hair
Wavy hair is distinguishable by its looser curl pattern. This hair is also known as the 2a-2c hair pattern.
Curly Hair
Curly hair is distinguishable by its tighter curl pattern, usually resembling an “S” shape. This hair is also known as the 3a-3c hair pattern.
Kinky Hair
Kinky hair is the tightest curl of all. These hair follicles are so tightly knit together that they often resemble a “Z” shape. These curls are known as 4a-4c hair patterns.
Find your porosity!
There are two types of porosities: low and high. One popular way to test which porosity you have is to take a few strands from your head, one from the front and one from the back, and place them in a glass of water. Porosity basically lets you know how your hair absorbs water, which is important because moisture balance is essential to hair care.
Low Porosity
Low porosity hair tends to be resistant to moisture. When water is added, you’ll notice the water tends to sit on top of the hair. This hair type benefits from deep conditioning because it penetrates the hair shaft to allow moisture more easily.
High Porosity
High porosity hair absorbs water and moisture faster than low porosity hair. While low porosity hair repels water, high porosity hair absolutely enjoys it. This hair type thrives with protein treatments because protein buildup can cause the hair to become mushy and unable to hold a style.
