The Complete Guide to Wavy Hair

Like curly hair, wavy hair also enjoys a lot of attention to tame it into your desired look. Styling wavy hair can be tough to figure out until you find the method that really works for you.
Until you do, some hair days will be excellent, and others will feel like a disaster. So, how can you achieve defined, hydrated and bouncy waves like that influencer on your IG reels every time?
You need the complete, detailed wavy hair hack that tells you all you need to do and not do. This is what this article will provide.

So You’ve Got Wavy Hair: What You Need to (or Probably Already) Know
You should learn to fall in love with caring for your hair, and not find it a burdensome chore. Let’s begin with the following must-knows to help you get familiar with your gorgeous waves.

  • Different hair types have different needs. So, even if you're wavy-haired, you must know that your hair may have a different texture or porosity level, different from another wavy girl.
  • The texture and porosity level of your hair usually determines how much water and hair products it retains. This tells you when it’s okay to use a large number of products on your hair (because your hair can absorb it) or when to use fewer products because it’ll make your strands fall and feel heavy.
  • Taking note of how your hair behaves when trying out styling techniques is important to help you learn what to avoid, and what to continue doing when next you style.
  • Good hair day is a combination of many factors, and not just your haircare routine. So, before you get frustrated at the results on the first try, think about what else could have made your routine turn out not quite the way you imagined. Hair type, weather, daily activities, hair length and more, contribute to the final look.
3 Main Methods to Try to Achieve Perfect, Bouncy Waves
So, Wavies, now that you’ve gotten familiar with the needs of your wavy hair, let’s get right into three essential methods to try to give you waves even you can’t resist.
  1. Curly Girl (CG) Method
Curly Girl Method for wavy hair focuses on working with products that do not contain sulfate or silicone to get the best of your hair. Lightweight products are the best products for wavy hair. The CG method for wavy hair is a little lengthy, but we’ve broken it down into three major steps:
  • Prepare: Do a pre-poo with some light oils before you shampoo your hair. Next, clarify your scalp with a gentle, revitalizing shampoo to remove hair buildup. Alldoer Gentle Clarifying Shampoo works to give the hair a nice shine and cleans up the scalp thoroughly. Wavy hair tends to allow sebum or oils to travel down the hair quickly, causing build-up, so it’s important to use a clarifying shampoo. Next, generously apply conditioner on your hair, using the Praying Hands application method, working in a nourishing and moisturizing conditioner like Alldoer Conditioner, to easily detangle your waves and form better clumps. Detangle using a wide-tooth comb, and then finish up by applying more conditioner and scrunching up your curls in small batches. Rinse lightly.
  • Apply & Style: Styling is the most critical step to lasting curls. For this, you need to get a curl cream or gel that helps you keep your waves in place. We recommend Alldoer’s Super Hold Jelly, which gives you well-defined waves. For lighter waves, finger coil your hair using your leave-in-conditioner. Your hair must be soaking wet if your aim is thicker, clumpier curls. Next, apply your gel or curl cream using the Praying Hands method (no raking) so that you don’t disrupt your curl pattern. Finally, scrunch up your curls until you hear a squishing, squirting noise. If you don’t hear this noise, it means your hair is not wet enough. Spray on some more water.
  • Dry: After applying your leave-in conditioner and curl cream or gel, it’s time to dry. Drying out your hair the right way is essential so that all your hard work doesn’t go to waste. Your hair can get frizzy and undefined if you don’t do it the right way. Thankfully, wavy hair dries out faster than curly hair. You can plop your hair to dry it. This simply means piling your wet hair on top of your head and wrapping it using a soft microfiber towel. It will extract and absorb more moisture from your hair than a T-shirt or regular towel. After a while, take down the towel and let your hair air-dry or use a diffuser to blow off the remaining moisture.
  1. Bowl Method
This is a fast-becoming popular styling method for wavy-haired girls. You’ll need your regular wash day products and a bowl with warm water for this method.
  • Wash your hair and condition it as discussed in the Curly Girl Method above.
  • Using the Praying Hands method, apply a curl cream and leave-in conditioner.
  • Take the bowl of warm water, flip your hair over into the bowl until the water covers a good length of hair, then put the bowl down, allowing the water from your hair to drip into the bowl. Next, scrunch your hair upwards towards your scalp to create waves and clumps.
  • Do this procedure up to four times, and you should see lovely curls and waves formed.
  • Get a holding gel like the Alldoer Super Hold Jelly and apply it to the formed waves by scrunching up your hair. It’ll give you more definition and longer-lasting pretty curls.
  1. Smaster's Technique
All the above styling methods have focused on how you apply wavy hair products to your hair to bring out the best of your waves. But this one is a little different. It shows you how much wavy hair product to apply and when.
  • First, take half of the hair products you usually use for styling your hair and apply it to your hair by raking it in or using the Praying Hands method.
  • Next, diffuse or air-dry your hair until it’s about 50% dry.
  • Wet your palms and use the other half of the products, smoothening your hair. Don’t let your hair stick to your palm; keep wetting your palm until the product is thoroughly applied.
  • Finally, diffuse or air-dry again until your hair is completely dry.

How to Refresh Wavy Hair

Water is the easiest way to refresh your curls, especially if you cannot wash your hair daily. It reactivates the products you’ve applied to your hair on wash day and causes wavy hair clumping, which is what you want.
Learn how to refresh wavy hair after wash day using these wavy hair tips:

    • You can fill a spray bottle with plain old water and spritz generously on parts of your hair that have become frizzy. If you have low porosity, you need to apply more water to avoid frizz. Plain water works well on days 2 and 3 (after wash day).
    • For days 4 and 5, you would need to whip out more products, including your leave-in-conditioner, gel, and curl cream. Or, you could mix the leave-in-conditioner, curl cream, and water in a spray bottle as your own DIY refresher. Shake well and spray on your hair, smooth down using your palms, and scrunch up to define those wavy curls.
    • Lastly, you can try the dry refresh method by applying only the leave-in-conditioner and curl cream on the frizz (no water), and voila, super duper rejuvenated waves are back!
Sure, your hair might feel high maintenance sometimes, but those bouncy, wavy curls are so worth it in the end. Try any of these wavy hair tips and tricks to find out what works best for you. You’ve got this, Wavies!
